Director of Finance and Controller

Position Summary 

The Director of Finance and Controller leads Prairie’s accounting operations and financial planning. This person ensures accurate, timely financial reporting while helping leadership manage cash flow, improve profitability, and make informed business decisions. 

This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for managing accounting staff, overseeing outside bookkeeping support, strengthening financial controls, and maintaining clear accountability throughout the accounting department. 

Key Responsibilities 

Accounting Operations and Financial Reporting 

  • Own the monthly and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and review of account balances. 

  • Establish and maintain a consistent closing schedule and ensure completed periods are locked appropriately. 

  • Deliver accurate financial statements, including profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow reporting. 

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and general ledger activity. 

  • Ensure customer deposits, progress billings, vendor credits, subcontractor costs, and change orders are recorded correctly. 

  • Oversee accounting system integrations and ensure synchronization errors are identified and resolved promptly. 

  • Coordinate with outside bookkeepers, CPAs, and tax professionals. 

Financial Planning and Business Performance 

  • Lead annual budgeting and maintain updated financial forecasts. 

  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and identify upcoming funding needs. 

  • Monitor revenue, gross margins, overhead, and net profitability against company goals. 
  • ?Review job profitability with estimating and production leadership, identifying cost overruns, missing costs, and margin concerns. 
  • Recommend improvements to pricing, spending, collections, and financial processes. 

  • Evaluate the financial impact of hiring, equipment purchases, and growth plans. 

 

Cash Management Financing and Bonding 

  • Oversee cash balances, payment planning, receivables aging, and collection priorities. 

  • Monitor debt obligations, credit availability, and financing requirements. 

  • Prepare financial information for banks, lenders, insurers, and bonding companies. 

  • Support leadership in financing discussions and bonding capacity planning. 

 

Internal Controls and Compliance 

  • Establish clear approval procedures and appropriate separation of financial duties. 

  • Ensure vendor and subcontractor payments follow company documentation and approval requirements. 

  • Maintain controls over payroll, commissions, employee advances, reimbursements, refunds, and vendor credits. 

  • Ensure exceptions are documented and approved by the Owner or General Manager. 

  • Coordinate tax reporting and maintain organized financial records. 

 

Team Leadership 

  • Directly manage accounting staff and define responsibilities, deadlines, and performance expectations. 

  • Coordinate internal staff and outside accounting support to prevent gaps or duplicate work. 

  • Train team members and document accounting procedures. 

  • Serve as the primary escalation point for accounting questions and discrepancies. 

  • Present financial results, concerns, and recommended actions to leadership in clear, practical terms. 

 

Qualifications 

  • Significant progressive accounting experience, including responsibility for month-end close and financial reporting. 

  • Experience supervising accounting staff and managing financial processes. 

  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, customer deposits, and progress billing. 

  •  Ability to build budgets, cash forecasts, and profitability analyses. 
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks and Excel; experience with BILL and AccuLynx preferred. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred. 

  • CPA or CMA designation preferred. 

  • Strong judgment, attention to detail, communication skills, and follow-through.

  • Monthly financial statements are accurate and delivered on schedule. 

  • Cash forecasts provide early visibility into funding needs. 

  • Job profitability reporting is reliable and actionable. 

  • Accounting discrepancies and integration errors are resolved promptly. 

  • Payment controls are consistently followed. 

  • Accounting staff understand their responsibilities and meet deadlines. 

  • Leadership receives clear recommendations that support profitability and growth. 

 Compensation 

Base Salary

Year-End Bonus: based on departmental performance and business objectives.
