The Hidden Burden We Leave Behind - Aligned Home Solutions

Most of us don’t think about what happens to our home after we’re gone. We plan for the big things—wills, finances, who gets what. But we rarely think about the quiet reality someone we love will face. Walking through our home. Opening drawers. Sorting through a lifetime of belongings—piece by piece. Recently, I spoke with Tywana, our local Chamber Director, while filming a short video in her home. She was showing me some of the meaningful items and photos from her mother’s home—things she had kept after her mother passed away last year. She shared that her mother’s home looked neat and tidy. But inside the drawers, cabinets, and closets… was a different story. To her surprise, Tywana’s mother was a bit of a pack rat.

And now, Tywana and her siblings had to go through it all. Old handkerchiefs and trinkets. Unlabeled photos of people they didn’t recognize. Receipts and manuals from decades ago. Books and tablecloths no one wanted. All carefully saved… for them to sort through later. Losing a parent is already one of the most emotional times in a person’s life. There are services to plan, finances to handle, and decisions to make. And then comes the time to clear out their parents home. Drawers. Closets. Basements. Attics. Garages. Sometimes even storage units. Most of us are unprepared for this. The emotional waves that come with every item. The questions: “Should I keep this?”. “Did this matter to them?”. “Will I regret letting this go?”. And certainly almost no one can prepare for how overwhelming it feels when it’s not just a few meaningful items—but an entire home filled with them.

It’s especially hard when siblings don’t always agree, time is limited, and life doesn’t pause. Many families are grieving while raising their own families, managing jobs, and trying to clear out an entire household—quickly. This is the part we don’t talk about enough: A full home becomes a full responsibility for someone else. Not just physically—but emotionally. This idea is explored in The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson. The concept is simple: as we age, we begin to intentionally declutter—keeping what truly
matters and letting go of the rest. Not out of fear, but out of care. Going through your belongings while you’re still able can be incredibly meaningful. You get to revisit cherished memories. You can share the stories behind special items with your loved ones, or at least label photos and items you want your loved ones to know more about. You can pass things on now—while you can see them being enjoyed. And if something no longer holds meaning, you can release it—rather than leaving it for your loved ones to sort through later. If you’re feeling inspired to begin, reading a book like this is a wonderful place to start. But if you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or short on time—you don’t have to do it alone.

As a Certified Organizational Specialist™, I support people through this process with compassion and without judgment. I help you make decisions, stay focused, and move forward—at a pace that feels manageable. Sometimes, all it takes is having someone there with you. One client told me she finally felt permission to let things go. Another cleared a closet she had avoided for two years—in just 90 minutes. What many people don’t realize is that excess belongings quietly drain your time, money, and energy. They cost you time when you can’t find things. Money when you repurchase what you already own. And energy—because everything you own takes up space in your mind. This work isn’t just about getting rid of everything. It’s about creating a home that feels lighter, calmer, and easier to live in surrounded by things you love.
And it’s about leaving something thoughtful behind. It’s a true gift to your family if you can lighten the burden they will have when you pass on.

If you’re ready to simplify your space or just need help getting started, I’d love to support you. I offer in-person and virtual consultations to create a plan that works for you. You don’t have to do it all at once. And you don’t have to do it alone.
