The Story Behind Culture on the River
Beautiful public spaces are only the beginning. It's the people, partnerships, and experiences that truly bring them to life.
It Started with a Vision
Every great community space begins with a simple question: How can we create a place where people want to gather?
For the Villages of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac, the answer wasn't simply to build new public spaces—it was to create welcoming places that would strengthen community connections, support local businesses, encourage visitors to explore downtown, and connect people with the beauty of the Wisconsin River.
Thanks to funding through the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation's (WEDC) Vibrant Spaces Grant Program, that vision began to take shape.
In Sauk City, the green space next to La Mexicana was transformed into a welcoming gathering place. Across the river in Prairie du Sac, a new public space was created near Ziegler Photography and the Tripp Heritage Museum. The improvements included landscaping, seating, lighting, walkways, electrical infrastructure, accessibility enhancements, public art, and flexible gathering areas designed for the community to enjoy.
These spaces were never intended to simply look beautiful—they were created to be lived in.
From Places to Gather to Reasons to Gather
As construction progressed, community leaders began asking an important question:
"Now that we have these amazing spaces, how do we encourage people to use them?"
The answer wasn't another festival or a single annual event. Instead, the vision grew into a months-long series designed to bring people together while celebrating the diversity that makes communities stronger.
With additional support through arts and community programming partnerships, the idea for Culture on the River was born.
Organizers envisioned a series that would celebrate traditions from around the world through music, food, art, wellness, and hands-on experiences—all while highlighting the businesses and organizations that make Sauk Prairie unique.
The name Culture on the River reflects that vision: celebrating culture while bringing people together along the Wisconsin River in two communities connected by far more than a bridge.
Bringing the Vision to Life
From July through October, Culture on the River transforms these public spaces into lively destinations for residents and visitors.
Each week, alternating between Tuesday evenings in Sauk City and Thursday evenings in Prairie du Sac, residents and visitors are invited to enjoy free live entertainment, cultural performances, interactive art activities, local food, and family-friendly experiences.
Each event explores a different part of the world—from Latin America and the Caribbean to Europe and Asia—giving families the opportunity to experience new traditions, flavors, music, and artistic expressions without leaving Sauk Prairie.
The series was intentionally designed to do more than entertain. It invites visitors to stroll through downtown, discover local businesses, dine at area restaurants, and experience both communities in a new way.
More Than an Event Series
Culture on the River represents what can happen when community partnerships come together around a shared vision.
The Villages of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac invested in creating welcoming public spaces. Community partners helped imagine how those spaces could be activated. Local businesses, artists, musicians, performers, volunteers, and organizations then contributed their talent and energy to bring that vision to life.
Through these combined efforts, underused spaces have been transformed into destinations where neighbors meet, children play, visitors explore, and community happens.
The true success of Culture on the River isn't measured by attendance alone. It's measured by the moments it creates: conversations between neighbors, children making art, families dancing together, people trying new foods, and visitors discovering everything Sauk Prairie has to offer.
Those are the moments these spaces were built for.
Looking Ahead
Culture on the River is just the beginning.
The hope is that these public spaces continue to evolve into places where people naturally gather throughout the year. As the event grows, so too does the opportunity to showcase local businesses, celebrate diverse cultures, and create shared experiences.
The story of Culture on the River is ultimately a story about partnership, vision, and community investment. It shows that when communities invest in both places and the experiences that fill them, public spaces become something more than parks or plazas.
They become the heart of a community.
As residents gather along the river this summer, they're experiencing more than an event—they're witnessing the vision that inspired these spaces come to life.
